Roll-Top Waterproof Duffels

Almost everything sold as a waterproof duffel is a water-resistant one. The fabric may well be fully coated, and the water still gets in — through the zip, which is a row of gaps, and through the stitch holes, which are thousands of tiny punctures in the panel you paid to coat.

A genuinely waterproof duffel is a different object. The seams are welded rather than sewn, so there are no needle holes; there is no zip, because the closure is a roll-top that folds down on itself and clips; and the fabric is a heavy tarpaulin laminate rather than a coated woven. That is why it looks the way it does, and why it costs what it costs.

We make both and we will tell you which one your use actually needs. Kit that lives in a boat, on a bike or on a building site needs the welded version. Kit that occasionally gets rained on between a car and a door does not, and buying the roll-top for that is spending money on a closure you will find annoying.

What we will not do is print the word waterproof on a sewn, zipped bag.

Our coated bag still got wet inside. Why?
The zip and the stitch holes. Coating the fabric does nothing about either — a zip is a row of gaps and every seam is thousands of needle punctures. If the contents must stay dry, you need welded seams and a roll-top closure, which is a different construction rather than a better version of the same bag.
Do we need the welded version?
Only if the bag is genuinely exposed — boats, bikes, sites, weather. For kit that crosses a wet car park occasionally, a coated water-resistant duffel is the right buy and the roll-top closure will simply annoy whoever uses it. We will tell you which side of that line you are on.
